Interview with Archie A. Ladshaw concerning his experiences as founder, owner, operator, and President of Ladshaw Explosives, Inc. in New Braunfels, Texas. Ladshaw discusses his family background, his employment with Brown Geophysical Company, Geophysical Associates, and Atlas Powder Company, the development of Ladshaw Explosives in Hobbs, New Mexico in 1963, as well as the home office move to New Braunfels in 1964 and the operation of powder mixing plants in Hobbs and Hazard, Kentucky. He also talks about processing methods and personnel employed in the plants, the sales of ammonium nitrate and slurry, safety factors in the operation, their line of products, and market coverage. Ladshaw shares his views on personnel turnover and the employment of salesmen, federal and Louisiana regulations of the explosives business, his plans for expansion, the factors that contribute to a successful business, the Ladshaw-Miller Development Company, Inc. and the Spoetzl Brewery, and offers a description of the company retirement plan. Finally, Ladshaw speaks about the importation of electric blasting caps from Scotland and bamboo poles from Taiwan, profit margins, and sales volume.
